A prisoner who has been convicted can choose whether they want to work or be in prison education. Most prisoners have access to courses and training while they are inside. These courses are run by the Offenders Learning and Skills Unit, with the aim to help prisoners gain qualifications that will help them find employment on release. Distance learning courses are also available.
Many inmates have literacy and numeracy problems and prison is a good opportunity to over come this. Prison is about rehabilitation, and a good way to ensure people will not re-offend is to make sure that they made the most of their time inside and have been encouraged to learn and better themselves so that they have more opportunities available to them upon release.
